Carson-Newman College is a historically Baptist liberal arts college, located in Jefferson City, which is a city in Jefferson County, in the US state of Tennessee, with a population approximated at a number of more than 7700 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. The city was originally named Mossy Creek, but it was renamed in 1901, in honor of Thomas Jefferson.
Carson-Newman College was established in 1851, first starting as Mossy Creek Missionary Baptist Seminary, receiving its current name after being renamed in 1880, as Carson College for James Harvey Carson, and after uniting with Newman College, alongside which it has existed for several years, this way being created one of the first coeducational institutions in the South.
Carson-Newman's athletic teams are known as the Eagles, which compete in NCAA Division II, in 16 varsity sports, for both men and women, among which there are: baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer and tennis. Their distinctive colors are orange and blue.
Among the noteworthy alumni from Carson-Newman College, there are: Aslyn - singer, Gideon Bull - developer of the first Antitoxin for the US troops in World War I, Millard F. Caldwell - 29th governor of Florida, T. B. Maston - Civil Rights Pioneer, Christiana Tah - former Minister of Justice Liberia, plus few others.
